A common law marriage is one in which a couple live together as though they were husband and wife, without actually having participated in an official ceremony.  In some states, once a couple has cohabitated in this manner for a certain period of time, they are then subject to and protected by many of the same laws governing official marriages.  In New York, however, this is not the case.  If this kind of relationship was established in New York, the couple has no legal obligation or option regarding officially ending their relationship.
